Welcome to the designed works of Morgan Jacobs. Here you will find all the designed works from my personal history. Some work fits into a curated architectural portfolio while other pieces seek to depict personal growth and experiences. This website hopes to illustrate not just the best independently designed projects of my own production but the narrative of my journey through the design world, hopefully clueing the visitor into more than simply my personal design philosophies, but the complex strategies, and values that drive me to be a designer.


My primary focus is on real and fictional narratives’ relationships to space, aesthetics, and social change.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; I am currently a third year student in the University of California Los Angeles’ college of Architecture and Urban Design. Within this program I enjoy broadening my interests while becoming evermore adept in subjects architecture inclusive and adjacent. When I graduate I will be receiving the Accredited Masters of Architecture with the Urban Humanities Initiative (UHI) certificate. In my time here I’ll have completed work that ranges from research papers and podcasts, to graphic design and VFX narratives. I thoroughly enjoy the process of making and inparticular storytelling. If you’re interested in my CV/ Resume you can find that in the tab below this one as the rest of this will include a bit of information for you to get to know me.
 &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; I began my career in architecture with no intent to go to architecture school. Rather a fascination with making things with my hands in highschool led me to desire a job in woodworking. Unfortunately colleges rarely offer such a degree these days and I found myself applying for an undergraduate degree in industrial design on the east coast. Unfortunately for me industrial designers and schools (rightfully) pride themselves on their artistic and hand drawing abilities. As someone who (while a musician) had never taken a proper art class in their schooling I was far outmatched by the competition entering undergrad. Luckily for me my portfolio that I had built of poorly taken photos, a toy Formula 1 Car, aguitar made of corks, and a foam boat caught the attention of a school I didn’t want to apply to in the first place, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. A school I originally thought had industrial design and when I learned they didn’t I pushed my applicable application to the architecture department. After a 6 hour drive south for an interview with the faculty I was awarded a position in the 2014-2015 Architecture Class. I accepted my place as I had been rejected at every other college or university and looked forward to transferring my abilities to product design after graduation. 
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 


&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Once at Charlotte however my thoughts surrounding what the architectural discipline encapsulated changed. They were not merely designers of homes or buildings but spaces and stories, people who worked for films, video games, city planning departments, theaters, they were artists and makers, and they had the chance to learn so much more than I ever imagined. Through socially conscious work regarding gentrification in South Korea and Urban inequalities in Rome I found drive in designing with human histories in mind, telling the stories of how these situations had developed through representation.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Now at UCLA I’m finishing out my masters with many projects focusing on these same topics. UHI and IDEAS campus technical electives have provided me with new storytelling and narrative crafting skills, while UCLA core and topics studios have allowed me to work on both social issues and representational queeries. My next goal is to work towards licensure and gain experience in the building project delivery while continuing to hone my craft as someone who thinks the stories of the people and world we live in are essential to the world we design in the future.

Roberge + Partner Sam RadiceAs the forces of climate change begin to fundamentally change the way we inhabit our planet, causing in the most extreme cases some regions to become wholly unrecognizable and more devastatingly, uninhabitable, this project acts as a means to not only acknowledge and give credence to such a scenario but to use this moment as an opportunity to fundamentally understand the nature of migration and resettlement, to reexamine aspects of the typical American landscape, and explore how the built environment both has and could form it. 
At the core of our objective is a passion to create a building system that foregrounds the needs of uprooted peoples by assessing the pitfalls of current institutions of migration while anticipating needs, wants, and desires so as to facilitate the growth of highly cosmopolitan, sustainable communities embedded within new and foreign regions. As such, a few aspects lie at the core of the creation of our building system — a need for a sense of community, a preservation of cultural identity, an understanding of family that transcends the nuclear unit, and a deep embedment of agency which we contend comes in the form of adaptability, flexibility, and economic opportunity. 
Situated within a semi-rural context, one highly typical of large swaths of the United States, our broader aim is to reexamine infrastructural propensities within such regions and offer an alternative mode of habitation that draws from foundationally agrarian surroundings and spatial individuality while exploring an alternative to the typical single family home and introducing a means of density we argue to be at the core of building cultural sustainability and reinforcing a sense of community. As such, our project juxtaposes urban and rural, individual and collective, static and variable and situates the inhabitant at the core of every decision.

We often think of the impact of our physical waste as a sign of our existence. The not so pleasant debris of living things, but rarely consider our digital rejectamenta.

Select - Delete - Empty

Actions with “no consequence” but what is now gone? What is removed and what if it wasn't?

Within the digital wasteland is the “Collection of Digital Curiosities” a sequence of curated spaces depicting data lost to time. Audio Libraries, image galleries, text logs, screen captures, trained AI, and other data sequences are culled in the billions. Here they are repurposed as the new indicator of past, and living, repurposing and recycling. Justifying their own existence on display A show enmass of our creations and neglect.

Comprehensive Studio

Pushing against questions of architecture as a machine for learning, this project focuses on the relationship between site, graphic indicators, and functional systems to produce a comprehensive proposal for an innovation hub at UCLA’s School of the Arts and Architecture. 

Capitalizing on the existing two sided courtyard, the project creates a third wall that’s lifted off the ground to allow for a continuation of the existing site circulation strategies. The building’s posture is that&#38;nbsp; of a “relieved lean”. The set back, leaning structure gives air to the courtyard and encourages occupation of the ground and the upper level exposed balconies. The facades are individually crafted to support a combination of programmatic concerns and are visualized to make the material of its construction what gives the project texture while having the potential to be articulated past visualization on a built facade.

A design for the “Super Opperable Window”

This investigation began with an exploration of patent history and typologies.
 
Defining a “Design” v. “Utility” patent and investigating architectural copyright this project leans on the representation of the real, and defined desires of patent offices to work on suggesting a “new” personal copyright. To copyright something it need not function, nor ever be built, nor can one copyright color. Notably small edits to existing patents often result in new copyrights. This patent obsesses over the image of the mechanical in a new highly operable window capable of infilling and replacing existing facades: a patent for those that find themselves suddenly trapped indoors.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN LATINX

This new proposal for a National Museum of the American Latinx&#38;nbsp; (NMAL) is a re-imagining of the traditional typology of the museum. Rather than an insular, untouchable culture exhibit, NMAL embraces the existing heterogeneity of the Latinx community by fragmenting the museum-visitor interaction throughout a public compound. 

The NMAL is defined by a manifesto of 5 ideals: 

1. Presence is to belong without concern for the establishment. 
2. Encouragement of heterogeneous community occupation via an activated ground. 
3. Curatorial Strategies that are not limited to history or artistry but are dynamic platforms for embracing public education. 
4. Materiality that reflects the dichotomy between the existing structures on the National Mall and the reality of Latinx history. 
5. Symbols and Metaphors have no place in a new expression of acceptance and accessibility. 

Through this conceptual framework the museum becomes a fundamental component of navigating the national mall. Rather than following the precedent of the tokenistic inclusion of Latin Americans in (the) American texts and being set to the sidelines by history’s writers, the museum engages visitors right from the subway exit and across the entire site, hosting cultural experiences along the way for past arts and - importantly - future protest. Unapologetically making edits where it sees fit, NMAL demands both recognition of the Latinx community and its inclusion in the American public.

This project explores the back-end of our daily life. Investigating some of the results of our everyday actions, our team identified ocean waste as a problem in both our coastal cities LA and Tangshan. The final project is a visual narrative set in the not-too-distant future: the crisis of oceanic pollution has escalated to the point that dirty water and trash force the closure of coastal beaches around the world and return to us as sea levels rise.

Via a study of automated parking tower typologies I came to understand the rotating arm that moves vehicles as a generative design tool with distinct parameters.

 As long as a given horizontal datum includes a minimum 30’x10’ space for the mechanical arm to pass through, the rest of that datum can be occupied with other programs. This insight allows the&#38;nbsp; new infill parking gym to&#38;nbsp; include an ever changing and shifting floor slab-to atrium relationship that is further split into parking spots, interior gym space, and unconditioned gym space. Further investigation of drawing techniques understanding the mechanical arm as a spatial-drawing apparatus informed the graphic exterior. This leads to an understanding of the building facade as a graphic indicator of the active interior and the nature of illustration as being of the building itself, not a mere representation or graphic sensibility.

This housing project located in the midst of low rise LA focuses on reorganizing the streets and courts of the horizontal urban sprawl into a packed and arrayed high-rise. A system of externally connected units are compressed and excised in an effort to carve out cul-de-sac atria and multi level streets as well as to dissolve the solid exterior and increase unit surface area. The local grounds are repurposed for urban agriculture, breaking the relentless repetition of LA’s sprawl with a rural agricultural park.

 Eight living modules with roughly organized interiors are established and make up the multi-story packing process. Modules are always subtracted as wholes to organize circulation through the project horizontally while vertical shafts run all the way beneath the public ground to provide parking below grade. The projection and patterning of the facade is seen as a field condition of the original elevation’s packing pattern. Mapped to each unit, the facade further dissolves the monolithic nature of the urban high-rise by using pattern and the module edges to lead the eye to unique and independent units within their necessary repetition.
